Arriving at the Glyncornel Environmental Centre |
||
|
After the bus journey we went into the classroom for an explanation of what we were expected to do. Andy explained that we needed to work as a team in order to make sure that we would successfully complete the course. If we argued and bickered then we would waste valuable time completing the tasks. We would need to solve some clues and answer the questions correctly to gain points towards the final score. Andy divided us into four groups - The Trackers, Bumble Bees, and the other two. |

Andy gave us a map of the course which we were designed to follow. Click HERE to see the plan of the course. We discussed the symbols and other details on the map and how we would approach the challenge. We also discussed the safety rules that needed to be observed and Andy also explained that if anyone was unfortunate to have an accident, then two members of the group would stay with the injured person and the other two would return to the Centre to call for help. But we were all convinced that we wouldn't need any emergency assistance. |

Andy demonstrates how to use the compasses |
||
| Andy took us out into the yard and demonstrated how we should use the compasses. We were able to locate North on our compasses and moved the dial in order to make sure that if we found ourselves lost we could establish which direction to aim for and then recognise a landmark on the map. Andy sent Mrs. Payne and Mr. Jones to their posts to assist us in our challenge. | ||
| Andy sent us to four different starting points and then we were off. We had to read the map and locate the various stations and find the white and orange divided square and read the clue on the back. One of our group wrote the answer on the sheet and then we had to decide which direction we needed to go to get to the next station and the next task. We should have used the compass to find which direction to go in, but we didn't keep calm and some of the adults needed to give us some advice. The other thing that we | ||
| we were guilty of was not discussing what to do next with our team members. We will need to do some | ||
| work on this aspect of the challenge. Andy had arranged a challenge for us all to complete. We had to throw a frisbee through a hoop. We were given points for completing this challenge and had to decide whether to give everybody a go and forsake some points OR get your best player to gain as many points for your team was a dilemma. Could you decide? Once we had completed all the tasks we returned to the Centre and submitted our answers. How did we do? Well, Andy commented that as we had not had any previous experience of Orienteering we really did well. | ||
