Many households were able to afford to buy an ANDERSON SHELTER after Sir John Anderson who was the Home Secretary of the day. This shelter was placed in the back garden and designed to be sunk into a 1 meter pit and covered with about 45 cm of earth. A steel door protected the entrance.
Families would spend the nights camped out in the shelter to avoid the German bombing. The boys seem to be enjoying themselves, however, most children were very scared (like Talia!). Conditions were usually cold, damp and very uncomfortable.
